About Mestre Gilson

 

Gilson Ribeiro de Jesus was born in Bahia, Brazil where he was exposed to the sights, movements and sounds of capoeira from a very early age. Originally developed by Afro-Brazilian slaves as a form of resistance to slavery and repression, Gilson was instantly drawn to the inherent energy, vitality and athleticism of capoeira. 

 

Gilson has cultivated a lifetime dedication to the sport, which saw his involvment in state, interstate and national competitions, where he represented his city Brasilia, the capital of Brazil. Indeed, while he lived in Brasilia, Gilson developed a distinctly fluid and elegant style of capoeira which stood out from many other practitioners. His capoeira mastery was highly commended when he won the Brazilian National Capoeira Championship - twice.

 

Gilson has collaborated with many top capoeira masters and capoeira schools not only in Brazil, but internationally. In Australia, he is respected and well known in capoeira circles for his musical and movement skills, and his eagerness to participate. 

 

Through Capoeira Bondi, Gilson hopes to pass on his unique experience, expertise and love of capoeira to all students. Incorporating music, song, dance, martial arts and acrobatics, capoeira is now recognised for its mental, physical and spiritual benefits around the world. Capoeira works on many different levels, so there is truly something for everybody!
